As you work your way through a training plan, your mileage and intensity build over a course of weeks. If you are training properly, your plan will start with relatively light effort and modest distances a few months from race day. As the weeks pass, your mileage and intensity levels will build, peak, and then taper.

Your total weekly mileage is your training volume. Your total weekly mileage and intensity together are your training load. Your overall goal is to gradually increase training load, with regular “step down” weeks for recovery, until you are about a month out from your target race. This is known as the “peak” of training, when your volume and intensity – your training load - are at the highest points of your training cycle. In other words, your mileage and intensity both “peak.” After that, you taper to race day.

There is no “magical point,” like a specific day, where your training load should peak. Instead, it is a period, generally about a month away from your race, where you are running more miles and with more focused intensity than at any other time in your training cycle. This is your “peak period,” not a “peak point.” Accordingly, you should think of your “peak” in terms of weeks, not a single point.

Keep in mind that the peak period is not the point at which your performance should “peak.” Ultimately, you want your performance to peak on race day. Your training plan should still contain high intensity, like pace work and speed work, inside the final weeks of training. You do want to give yourself more rest by lowering your volume, but you should maintain your speed and high-level performance as you approach race day. If all goes according to plan, the lower mileage during the taper will leave you feeling more rested, but the continuing intensity will have you feeling fast and ready for race day.

If you are uncertain about how to structure a training plan for your half-marathon or marathon, consider working with an experienced coach who can guide you through training. Your coach will help you find the proper volume, load, buildup, peak, and taper for your race.

Paul Carmona is the Online REVEL Coach who has designed training plans specifically for REVEL downhill courses. He is a 20-time REVEL Marathon Finisher and has run multiple Boston Qualifiers on every REVEL course that he has run, with his current streak at 18 BQs in a row at REVEL marathons!

Running with proper technique makes runners more efficient meaning you can run longer, faster and safer. TOSH Orthopedics has four tips to help with your technique. More tips to follow in upcoming newsletters. 1. Stride angle, the angle formed by your thighs at toe off. This angle should be as wide and large as possible. Improved stride angle is accomplished through two key modifications; rear leg extension and a higher knee drive in the front leg. Both motions require strength and range of motion in the hips. TRAINING TIP: Maintenance Running in Winter

Winter Training Tip

Winter is when many runners do not follow a specific training schedule, and often wonder how far and how hard they should be running during the “off-season.”

Instead of thinking of the November-February period as “off-season,” it is better to think of this period as “maintenance” mode, where the primary focus should be on maintaining an aerobic base. Most training miles should be in an easy, conversational pace, and the weekly training should follow these general guidelines:

  • Aim for 40-60 minutes of easy running, three to four times per week. Make one of those a longer run, but don’t aim for anything much longer than 90 minutes or so.
  • Mix up routes to keep boredom away, or run with friends or groups.
  • Take plenty of walk or water breaks if needed.

Once a week or every other week, it’s ok to go out and do some speed or hill work, but keep in mind that the level of effort in these workouts should be less than what is typically scheduled during racing season. The goal of these “maintenance” speed and hill sessions is not to perform at high levels, but to keep just a little bit of intensity in the weekly running regimen. Remember, the primary goal is to work on building a strong aerobic engine, which means lots of miles at slow, easy paces.

For a training plan that is designed specifically for REVEL downhill courses, consider the REVEL Online Coaching Program, which is designed by 20-time REVEL Marathon Finisher and Coach Paul Carmona, who has run multiple Boston Qualifiers on every REVEL course!

With winter fast approaching and colder temperatures the norm, going running means a little more preparation. Here are three things to consider before heading out for a cold weather run: Dress appropriately. As a rule of thumb, dress for weather 20 degrees warmer than the actual temperature outside. You may be a little chilly as you start, but once you get moving and generate sweat you’ll get comfortable, without getting too warm. Stay hydrated. In colder months, runners often neglect drinking adequate fluids. Because you sweat in both cold and warm seasons, it’s important to always take in enough fluids. Be visible. Colder temps also mean shorter days, which equal less light and more darkness. Take your personal safety and protection into your own hands by wearing a reflective vest and consider a headlamp and backlight too, for ultimate safety.
