Canyon Stewardship

Big Cottonwood Canyon is a protected watershed canyon and provides a large portion of the drinking water for the Wasatch Front. Our ability to permit REVEL Big Cottonwood depends upon our good stewardship of the canyon. Please help us in this effort by following these rules:

  • Do not use the outdoors as a restroom. Any participant caught using the outdoors as a restroom will be disqualified and may be subject to fines and penalties. The start venues and every aid station will have porta-potties, and they will have more porta-potties than the industry standard.
  • Place all your trash at the start lines in garbage cans.
  • Leave all clothing items that you wish to shed (including gloves) at an aid station and not along the road. *Remember that any clothing items left on the course or at aid stations will be donated to charity.*
  • Leave all cups, wrappers, and Gu packets as close to an aid station as possible.

We hope that you enjoy REVEL Big Cottonwood enough to help us in this effort so that we can be good stewards and ensure our ability to continue running the event in this beautiful venue.

Finish Line Festivities

The finisher's area will be packed with food, live music by Jersey Street, awards ceremonies, vendor booths, and more.

Massage Envy

Massages will be provided at the finish line by Massage Envy

Papa Johns

You don't want to miss out on the delicious Papa John's Pizza being served at the finish. Whether it's their signature sauce, toppings, original fresh dough, or even the box itself, they invest in ingredients to ensure that they always give you the finest quality pizza!

NEW! Enjoy delicious pancakes from locally owned Kodiak Cakes. Their famous Flapjacks will be flipped fresh for you as you cross the finish line.

Show Your Support To Businesses Along The Course

Make sure when you visit any of the businesses along the course to tell them thank you for supporting REVEL Big Cottonwood! Check out the following offers from businesses along the course.

Check your participant bag for a FREE (with $2 donation) Jersey Mikes sub coupon! Your donation will contribute to our Official Charity partners, Cottonwood Heights Foundation & Cottonwood Canyons Foundation.

Race week is finally here for the REVEL Big Cottonwood Marathon & Half! Stay tuned as we pass along a few more updates this week. All questions regarding the race can also be answered via our Participant Guide or Race Info page.

Participant Tracking

Your friends and family can track your progress as you pass timing checkpoints along the course. They can also sign up to receive text alerts each time you cross a timing checkpoint. Your personalized link for people to track you is:

https://www.runrevel.com/bcm/track

Give this link to your friends and family. This link is also where they can sign up to receive text alerts (or you can sign up for them)

NEW! Share a Message or Fun Fact To Be Read As You Finish

Do you have a fun fact or announcement to share as you cross the finish line? Check your email and click the link to create a custom announcement to be read as cross the finish line. *Note: Due to high volumes of runners crossing, all messages may not be read.

Drop Bags

You will receive a race bag when you pick up your packet at the expo. This bag is for you to take to the starting areas. A number that matches your race bib will be put on the outside of your race bag. This is to identify your bag at the finish area after the race, and you will need your bib to prove ownership of your bag when you pick it up. Please carry any belongings to the starting area in this bag, as opposed to any other personal bags, which cannot be identified by your race number. Bags must be placed in the bag trucks at the starting areas at least 15 minutes prior to the race start.

**Any personal belongings dropped at aid stations or anywhere along the course will be donated to charity.**

Timing & Bibs

The races will be chip-timed using timing tags adhered to the back of your bib. Your time will begin when you cross the starting line and stop when you cross the finish line. Overall prize winners (top 3 in each race) will be determined by gun time, not chip time. Please do not tamper with the timing chips, as they cannot be replaced once linked to your bib number.

Because the timing tag is adhered to the back of your race bib, it is important that you do not cover your bib with clothing or other objects that may interfere with the tag reader when you are crossing the start and finish lines. Furthermore, in order to ensure that race volunteers, officials, and photographers can properly identify you, you must wear your bib on the front of your person in an unobstructed position. If the photographers along the course cannot see your bib number, we will have no way to get your photos to you.

Pacing

Run Your Race Pacers will be running both the full marathon and half marathon to lead everyone to a fast time. The full marathon will include pacers at various Boston-qualifying paces, including:

  • 3:05 (Men's 18-34 BQ mark, 7:03/mile pace)
  • 3:10 (Men's 35-39 BQ mark, 7:15/mile pace)
  • 3:15 (Men's 40-44 BQ mark, 7:26/mile pace)
  • 3:25 (Men's 45-49 BQ mark, 7:49/mile pace)
  • 3:35 (Women's 18-34 BQ mark, 8:12/mile pace)
  • 3:40 (Women's 35-39 BQ mark, 8:23/mile pace)
  • 3:45 (Women's 40-44 BQ mark, 8:34/mile pace)
  • 3:55 (Women's 45-49 BQ mark, 8:57/mile pace)
  • 4:00 (Women's 50-54 BQ mark, 9:09/mile pace)
  • 4:10 (Women's 55-59 & Men's 65-59 BQ mark, 9:32/mile pace)
  • 4:25 (Women's 60-64 & Men's 70-74 BQ mark, 10:06/mile pace)

The half marathon will include pacers at the following paces:

  • 1:30 (6:52/mile)
  • 1:40 (7:38/mile)
  • 1:50 (8:24/mile)
  • 2:00 (9:10/mile)
  • 2:10 (9:55/mile)
  • 2:20 (10:41/mile)

Because of the downhill nature and uniqueness of the courses, we will be using the Smart Pacing strategy, which is an effort-based pacing strategy that varies the pace of each mile based on the % grade. This pacing strategy has proven to be very effective, particularly on courses like Big Cottonwood.

Pace bands will be available for purchase at the expo.

Cullimore, KelvynTo All REVEL Big Cottonwood Race Participants,

Welcome to Cottonwood Heights and the beautiful Wasatch Mountains that are the backdrop of our city. Your experience here is sure to be among the most unique of all races you have run. Not only is the setting stunningly beautiful, but the race is designed to help you achieve a personal best – it is virtually all downhill!!! We have done our part to help you achieve that personal best time and hope it will become a reality for you.

The marathon begins at an elevation of 9,700 feet and ends at the finish line in Cottonwood Heights, an elevation of about 4,450 feet. That is a vertical drop of 5,250 feet. But you will not likely notice as you will be distracted by the beauty of the course.

Our city slogan is “City Between the Canyons” as we are flanked by Big Cottonwood Canyon on the north and Little Cottonwood Canyon on the South. We are perfectly situated for excellent access to recreation, transportation, and education. We are a thriving business center. You will run by the Cottonwood Corporate Center, Old Mill Corporate Center and end near the Union Park Business Center. These are home to well-known companies such as Overstock.com, Jet Blue, Extra Space Storage, SanDisk, Instructure, Blue Cross Blue Shield and many other thriving technology, financial service, and investment oriented companies.

Created as a city in 2005, Cottonwood Heights has quickly earned a reputation as a progressive community and a very desirable place to live. In a few short years after our incorporation as a city, Money Magazine recognized us as one of the 100 most desirable places to live for a city our size in the United States. We are proud sponsors of the REVEL Big Cottonwood Marathon and Half as it provides us an opportunity to share the beauty and uniqueness of our thriving community. We hope you will take the time to explore our restaurants, stores and business establishments both before and after the race.

We express appreciation, in particular, to the businesses along Fort Union Boulevard (the main thoroughfare you will traverse through the city), who have made significant accommodations for this race and the citizens who will be temporarily inconvenienced due to detours in their Saturday morning travels to facilitate the race course.

We welcome to our vibrant city the thousands of runners along with their family and friends. This is a great event and we hope you enjoy your participation so much you will consider returning not only for future races, but to enjoy the amenities our city and area have to offer.

Sincerely,

Due to road closures and participant safety all runners must take the buses the morning of the race. You may not park or be dropped off at the start lines.

All participants will park in the lots and parking garages directly to the south of the finish line. Parking is limited, so please carpool if possible.
